This recording sounds just about as beautiful as one might imagine, although the title of "orchestra" might be something of misnomer for an ensemble that seems to consist of less than ten people. Five kotos would make as much sound as about 50 other instruments, admittedly, so listeners seeking a lush, sonic, twanging landscape will not be disappointed. It is also a good introduction to the world of Japanese music, as other important musical instruments such as shamisen and the wonderful shakuhachi are also featured. The program consists of three extended pieces, each with its share of marvelous moments. The final piece, "Shochikubai," is from the sankyoku or trio music tradition, and features the smaller grouping of one koto, shamisen, and kokyu. ~ Eugene Chadbourne
