After minimal wave duo Linea Aspera released their remarkable debut LP in 2012, they disbanded and concentrated on other projects, with vocalist Alison Lewis notably producing solo work as Zoé Zanias and collaborating with Schwefelgelb's Jonas Förster as Keluar. Over the years, Linea Aspera deservedly amassed an underground following, and their first album became one of Dark Entries' biggest-selling titles. The label issued Preservation Bias, a collection of the duo's early material primarily drawn from their initial cassettes, and they began performing shows in Europe once again. Their self-released second album appeared in 2020, and it picks up right where the first one left off, but these songs feel a little warmer and more human, making fewer scientific allusions. The lyrics are often less bitter and more sympathetic, even expressing fascination and uneasy joy on tracks like the glowing "Entanglement" and the upbeat, sparkling "Entropy." Over thumping beats and tense arpeggios, dramatic opener "Solar Flare" describes bonding with someone over shared trauma. The album's later tracks depict a more damaged emotional state, with Lewis apologizing for being forced to destroy someone's fantasy on "Decoherence," and the HTRK-like "Wave Function Collapse" acting as a heavy-hearted breakup declaration for the sake of her sanity. A natural outgrowth from Linea Aspera's debut, LP II feels more sensual and emotionally complex, and sounds just as magnificent.
