Except for a 1984 session for the Fresh Sound label, this was the first recording by
Dave Pell's Octet since 1961. The personnel is completely different from the earlier group, but the music is very much in the 1950s cool jazz tradition in which
Pell excelled, with arrangements by
Marty Paich,
Bill Holman, and
Johnny Mandel. The lineup is full of top Los Angeles-based players, including
Pell on tenor, trumpeter
Steve Hufsteter, trombonist
Rick Culver, baritonist
Bob Efford, pianist
Bob Florence, guitarist
Barry Zweig, bassist
Tom Warrington, and drummer
Frank Capp. Their renditions of such songs as "Love Me or Leave Me," "You're My Everything," "Them There Eyes," and "I Found a Baby" are cool, but frequently exciting. Recorded at a now-defunct club, this LP was reissued on CD in 1999.
