After a lucrative career playing commercial music, tenor-saxophonist
Nino Tempo returned to the
Stan Getz-inspired music that he loved most in his later years. This live set features him in a quintet with trumpeter
Conte Candoli, pianist Mike Lang, bassist
Brian Bromberg, and drummer
Terri Lyne Carrington jamming on standards and blues.
Candoli, while showing his age a bit, is in decent form, the rhythm section swings, and
Tempo sounds very much in his prime. His melodic explorations of such songs as "I'm Gettin' Sentimental Over You," "Deep Purple," and "Just Friends" are enjoyable, making this one of
Tempo's definitive statements in a jazz setting. ~ Scott Yanow
