A variety of all-star jazz and studio musicians who were at the time based in Hollywood were gathered together for this friendly jam session. The LP contains four swing standards and two basic originals played by such top players as altoists
Benny Carter (who also plays a bit of trumpet) and
Willie Smith, tenors
Plas Johnson and Babe Russin, trumpeters
Harry "Sweets" Edison and Shorty Sherock, trombonist
Murray McEachern (doubling on alto), clarinetist Gus Bivona, guitarist Al Hendrickson, pianist
Jimmy Rowles, bassist Mike Rubin and drummer Irv Cottler. Everyone gets a chance to solo and the spirited music, although not up to the competitive level of a
JATP concert, has its exciting moemnts. Capitol soon followed this set with
Session at Riverside, an East Coast equivalent. ~ Scott Yanow
