The ninth studio album by Spanish heavy metallers
Avalanch was conceived as the soundtrack to a fantasy comic book by
Luis and Rómulo Royo. The story, inspired by King Arthur's lore, is situated in a post-apocalyptic future, and typically deals with sword fighting among the forces of good and evil. Musically, this is one of
Avalanch's more adventurous outings, peppering their customary blend of power and melody (the single "Baal") with multi-layered instrumentals ("Lost in Saint Patrick") and incursions into hitherto uncharted territory for the band such as black metal ("Marduk") and even hip-hop ("New York Stoner," with guest
Tony Almont), always driven by the fierce guitar work of leader
Alberto Rionda. Also of note, while the band had previously released English-language versions of two of its records,
Malefic Time Apocalypse is the first
Avalanch original album to be sung entirely in English -- a rather divisive matter among fans. The deluxe edition adds the comic book and a DVD with extras.
