Best known as one of jazz's greatest clarinetists of the post-1980 years,
Eddie Daniels is also a very talented if underrated tenor saxophonist. On this quartet date, he leads an all-star quartet that includes the acclaimed veteran
Hank Jones on piano. With the exception of his own "Why You..." and
Thad Jones' relatively lesser-known "Mean What You Say," the set is comprised of standards.
Daniels, who is equally fluent on both of his instruments, is heard throughout in excellent form, inspired by the swinging rhythm section and coming up with consistently creative ideas. Recommended.
