Altoist
Rene Bloch, who came to fame playing "Harlem Nocturne" with
Johnny Otis and performing regularly with
Perez Prado's band, went out on his own for this orchestra date. The jazz content on the CD reissue is fairly light, but the occasional solos from tenor saxophonist
Teddy Edwards, the infectious rhythms, the clean and frequently exciting ensembles and the six percussionists (which include
Willie Bobo and
Mongo Santamaria) result in some stirring music. The styles range from Latin jazz and mambos to a few originals heavily influenced by rock & roll. A fun set. ~ Scott Yanow
