For an ensemble associated with the avant-garde, this album of familiar Ellington,
Monk, and Mingus tunes is a bit of a departure. The group is particularly adept at handling the staccato rhythms and odd phrasing of the three
Monk songs here, including a lovely version of "Ruby, My Dear." Given the brooding intellectualism of some of Davis' past work, his casually swinging piano work is somewhat of a surprise. The lone original piece, a specially commissioned composition by
Davis, is a slowly developing blues of sorts that never really takes off. But for its outstanding musicianship and highly original takes on some classic material, this album is strongly recommended. ~ Joel Roberts
