The debut recording by the
New York Voices is more impressive for the sound and talent of the group than for the material they perform. A somewhat commercial effort (all recent poppish songs other than "'Round Midnight" and "Caravan") given mundane arrangements, this set features the group at a time when they had five vocalists and were clearly hoping to sell a lot of records. One can hear the potential of the vocal ensemble come through, and thankfully most of the material heard on this set has been long discarded. This is a CD that is more intriguing on a historic rather than musical level. ~ Scott Yanow
