With unbelievably lo-fi dance punk, German transplants to San Francisco
Zeigenbock Kopf grind through the noise and sadism of
Merzbow and
Throbbing Gristle while crafting a bizarrely catchy exploration of gay erotica and masculinity. "Sex With a Man," "This Bass Is Too Loud," and "Get Your Dicks in the Mix" are hardly accessible -- musically or lyrically -- but
Hans and Uli Blunshlapen entirely defy the conventions of homogenous club anthems as well as San Francisco no wave. Their beats are destructive, the bass is always too loud as they say, and the highs are abrasive and painful. There's a little bit of
KMFDM's
What Do You Know Deutschland? in
Nocturnal Submissions, especially in the dark and ominous "Hunter, Sleeper," but really,
Zeigenbock Kopf is so gritty, dirty, and abused that they sound almost entirely unique. And, while this isn't music that will grab the attention of the masses, the stand-alone obliqueness of the project is sure to attract and confound adventurous listeners. ~ Charles Spano
