Bob Ackerman has recorded quite a few albums in his career (without gaining much fame), but the adventurous reed player has rarely sounded freer and more comfortable than on this trio set with bassist
Wilber Morris and drummer
Dennis Charles. Switching between tenor, alto, soprano, clarinet, and flutes,
Ackerman digs into post-bop music (all eight songs are his originals), never being shy to either caress a melody, leave space, or let his emotions completely loose. His use of dynamics is excellent and there is diversity in the songs, which include "Dennis Is Driving," "Tranein' In," "Ode to Johnny Hodges and Benny Carter," "Re: Bela Bartok," and "The March That Stopped the Band." This CD is highly recommended to post-bop and free jazz listeners and is one of
Bob Ackerman's definitive recordings.
