Washington, D.C.-based duo Model Home emerged in 2018 with a numerical series of digital releases consisting of truly warped improvisations rooted in hip-hop. Their tracks feature stream-of-consciousness lyrics by NAPPYNAPPA over cracked, spluttering electronics and druggy beats provided by Pat Cain and a series of guest contributors, including Beautiful Swimmers' Maxmillion Dunbar under his Dolo Percussion alias. Serving as a concise introduction to the duo's expanding universe, 2020 LP One Year collects tracks from the project's first eight releases; by the time it appeared, they were already up to 16. NAPPYNAPPA's vocals are often radically altered with pitch-shifting devices and distortion effects, seeming to frantically burst out of the speakers. "Damn Disco 99" is particularly disorienting, with voices darting from multiple angles over reversed beats. The backing tracks are murky and lo-fi, sometimes venturing into agitated electro (as on "Livin' in a Treehouse") or severely damaged old-school rap. Like Sensational's early releases, which were recorded using headphones plugged into a microphone jack, this is startlingly inventive hip-hop which favors pure, unbridled expression over structure, hooks, linear progression, or any prevailing trends.
