She sounds just as amateurish as
Momus obviously wanted her to be, but
Laila France's debut album is enlivened by stellar poptronica production by
Momus -- with a bit of help from
Robin Rimbaud (aka
Scanner) and Douglas Benford (aka
Si-Cut.db). Tracks like "Japanese Especially," "The Pink Song," and "Trance Cocktail Airlines" have the classic air of
Brigitte Bardot-type sex-kitten glamour, though the lyrics occasionally go just a bit too far ("The Sensations of Orgasm," "First Love Blood") down those roads (probably also intentional on
Momus' part. ~ John Bush
