Butt Trumpet's Primitive Enema was their first record to be released by a major label, which only proves how crazed the record companies were following the explosion of alternative rock in the early '90s. Certainly,
Primitive Enema is one record that makes more sense on a smaller label. Crude and amateurish -- and fiercely proud of it, by the way --
Butt Trumpet is more of a practical joke than a real band. All of the songs are derived from either
the Stooges or
the Cramps, with an emphasis on jokey, vulgar lyrics and simple, brutal riffs. Nothing is catchy, but it wasn't intended to be. Nothing is particularly funny either, but that might just be a matter of taste. And the production is just slightly too clean to make
Primitive Enema sound dangerous. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
