Another in RCA's welcome line of Latin centenary-celebration reissues,
Grandes Baladas de los 60's includes 40 of the smoothest, most dramatic ballads from a decade when the Mexican legends of the '40s and '50s met a new crop of popular ballad singers like
José José ("Cuidado") and
Roberto Jordán ("Amor de Estudiante"). Listeners can be assured that these are the original versions (no re-records), ranging from clever crossover pop nuggets (like "Sospecha" by Ricardo Roca or "Felicidad" by
Estela Núñez) to string-laden MOR ("El Despertar" by
Marco Antonio Muñiz or "Somos Novios" by
Armando Manzanero). Admittedly, the selections usually aren't among the best for each artist, but this two-disc set presents the soundtrack of an era for fans of Latin pop. ~ John Bush
