Originally put out as the only release by the Davison record label, this CD reissue has 11 selections featuring the fiery cornetist
Wild Bill Davison, trombonist
Vic Dickenson, clarinetist
Buster Bailey, pianist
Dick Wellstood, bassist Willie Wayman and drummer
Cliff Leeman in 1962. Heard in prime form, Wild Bill as usual tosses in high notes in unexpected spots, mixes together sarcasm with sentimentality and shows on tunes such as "Eccentric" and "Riverside Shuffle" that few could drive an ensemble like he could. A pair of numbers ("Memories of You" and "Who's Sorry Now") from the 1972 Manassas Jazz Festival (with clarinetist Tom Gwaltney and trombonist Slide Harris) were added to the reissue which is recommended to
Wild Bill Davison fans. ~ Scott Yanow
