Forenzics is the latest project from New Zealand legends and former Split Enz members Tim Finn and Eddie Rayner. Throw out everything you thought you knew about the old Split Enz, because here they are revisited with a modern outlook, complete with electronics and lush string arrangements (as can be heard on the opening Walking.) Taking inspiration from some of their favourite and lesser-known Split Enz sections, Forenzics create a potpourri of rich sounds and musical ideas.
This album becomes a full family affair when Noel Crombie, another former Split Enz member, joins on drums for a few tracks (Walking, Strange Stars), and even Phil Manzanera from Roxy Music jumps in on guitar!
A few tracks are reminiscent of the old ballad-style rock n roll Spliz Enz/Crowded House are known for (Abandoned, Empty Nest), however, this album is full of treats and surprises from this newly energized duo, like Premiere Fois which could be a dead ringer for an Arctic Monkey's track. Chances Are treats us to an upbeat groove, Shut the Door is a manic 70s throwback and Unlikely Friend presents us with a smooth track fit for a jazz bar. For two artists who have been in the music game since the late 70s, Finn and Rayner have still managed to produce something that is 50% what we love about their music, and 50% something completely fresh. It's good to have these Kiwi boys back producing music! © Jessica Porter-Langson
