Sherlock Holmes: The Classic Themes is an odd album. Collecting the musical themes from several Sherlock Holmes films -- including The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, The Seven Percent Solution, Young Sherlock Holmes, and The Hound of the Baskervilles -- the disc does serve some purpose, since Holmes fanatics will want all of these in one place. However, there isn't any unifying musical theme on the collection:
Miklos Rozsa's theme doesn't necessarily complement
Stephen Sondheim's songs and neither sit well next to
Henry Mancini. Taken as individual pieces, each one works nicely, but the don't gel into a cohesive whole. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
