Jessy Dixon and Rev.
James Cleveland formed The Original Chimes in Chicago in the fall of 1957. The group included
Dixon, Claude Timmons, Lee Charles and the soulfully expressive gospel storyteller
Dorothy Norwood who was later replaced by the wild "sanctified" lead of the great Imogene Greene.
James Cleveland also sang and recorded with the group. In April 1964,
Jessy began recording with The Chicago Community Choir, one of the hottest revival type aggregations in postwar African-American gospel. His female backing group, The Dixon Singers, were put together shortly thereafter. This tape includes a selection of the best from all the above formats. It's hot driving gospel choral singing and soulful lead interpretations from six long out-of-print albums (cassette only). ~ Opal Louis Nations, Roots & Rhythm Newsletter
