Skankin' Pickle's debut album
Skafunkrastapunk was one of the first American underground records to fuse hardcore punk with ska, heavy metal and funk. It's too many styles for one record, and speed-metal tends to dominate the more exotic ska guitar and slap-bass. And while the group tries to make some sort of political statement with cuts like "Racist World," they are essentially just punky party music, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Still, in order to pull off party music, you need to capture your live energy on record, which
Skankin' Pickle does only sporadically over the course of
Skafunkrastapunk. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
