While not exactly luau music,
Slidin' on the Frets: The Hawaiian Steel Guitar Phenomenon is steeped in island tradition. Made up of historical recordings highlighting the Hawaiian music craze of the early part of the 20th century, these 23 songs range in origin from Trinidad, Argentina, France, Greece, and more and feature a style quite removed from
Don Ho's "Hawaiian Wedding Song." These gritty recordings have an earthy, bluesy feel to them much more akin to a Delta blues or pedal steel guitar sound, but at times have a wacky vaudeville/ragtime feel. Quite eclectic and never the same sound twice, Slidin' on the Frets is an interesting listen as well as an historical document. ~ Zac Johnson
