Phil Markowitz is best known for his recordings with
Chet Baker and for his period (1983-85) with
Mel Lewis' orchestra. Very much a two-handed player,
Markowitz stretches the bop tradition throughout his CD with complex chord voicings and a strong drive. Best are his transformations of "Infant Eyes" and "Yesterdays," along with the soulful "Sweet Sisters" and the infectious momentum of "Toko Blues." On this rewarding set, the pianist blends in quite well with bassist
Eddie Gomez and drummer
Al Foster.
