As
Art Department,
Jonny White and
Kenny Glasgow earned praise for the deep, dark tech-house they presented on their 2010 single "Without You" and the following year's album
Drawing Board. That hypnotic, dead-of-night aesthetic is also on full display on the pair's mix album
Social Experiment 003, another installment of the series inspired by the parties thrown by
White's label, No. 19. Bookended by tracks from
Art Department themselves, the pair seamlessly mix tracks such as White & Nitin's "La Cueva" and
Ali Love's "The Jungle [Brigante's Mix]" into a whole that shares a deep groove but offers enough variety for listening on the dancefloor or in an armchair. While the mix is strong throughout, its beginning and end are particularly captivating, with the standouts including
Luca C,
Brigante, and
Robert Owens' "Tomorrow Can Wait [Art Department Remix]";
DJ Hell and
Bryan Ferry's "U Can Dance [Carl Craig Remix]"; and "Robot Heart,"
Art Department's single with
BLUD,
Shaun Reeves, and
Damian Lazarus.
Social Experiment 003 also presents eight exclusive tracks that include
Fuckpony's "Bongo Born [Tale of Us Remix]" and
My Favorite Robot's excellent "Not Progress." Even if this mix can't fully re-create the experience of attending one of the Social Experiment bashes, it shows once again that
Art Department have a distinctive aesthetic that extends to the musical company they keep.
