This compilation functions well as a sampler of
Theo Parrish's recordings for his own Sound Signature label, showcasing a wide scope of his many styles, from the laid-back ambient minimalism of "Shadow Dancing" to the thick percussive rhythms of "Lake Shore Drive." Featuring ten tracks, this isn't anywhere near a comprehensive collection of
Parrish's work to date, though it's a fitting beginning for anyone who either can't find his 12" EPs or prefers a CD. Yet where
First Floor and
Parallel Dimensions retained a consistent aesthetic from beginning to end, this compilation sounds like a compilation rather than an album. Even though the tracks are ordered with precision, it comes across as a bit scattered. This complaint is minor, though. In the end, although the best way to approach
Parrish's canon is via the 12" EPs or perhaps via one of his albums, this compilation will no doubt do the job even if -- considering how many wonderful tracks are missing here -- it does cheat listeners a bit.
