Sounds Like a Silver Holler adopts the same dichotomy of sound that made
Black Tambourine and early
Velocity Girl so great -- over a sludgy fuzz of indie rock guitars come lovely, drawn-out melodies in a hazy female voice reminiscent of
Tiger Trap. Some of
Starlight Conspiracy's instrumental work is a bit standard and rock-oriented, which keeps the band from approaching dream pop or shoegazer greatness, but a decent sense of dynamic arrangements and the always-gorgeous vocals help a great deal.
Sounds Like a Silver Holler will never live up to similar noise-pop records (with
Black Tambourine being almost definitive on the American end), but it's a solid effort nonetheless.
