An unmixed collection of tracks that haven't appeared on CD,
Star 69 Extended Mixes, Vol. 1 should appeal to fans of
Peter Rauhofer's primal sexiness and DJs who have chosen CDs over vinyl.
Rauhofer's day job may be remixing the likes of
Madonna and
Cher, but his Star 69 label shows an interest in the kind of progressive house championed by
John Digweed and
Deep Dish without letting go of the tribal drums that made him famous. Tracks like
That Kid Chris' hit "Satisfied" and
Airmale's dark and hypnotic "Clear" benefit from the unmixed format since they're so well constructed, but the ten minutes of
Dan Q's simplistic "Aura Tribe" feels like an eternity when removed from the dance floor.
Magic Cucumbers brings back memories of the
Murk boys in their heyday and
Lula's "Men=Drugs" ends the collection with just the right amount of camp.
