East London post-punk collective Snapped Ankles became known for their theatrical stage shows based around a deep woods motif. Synthesizers built into rotting logs, leafy costumes obscuring the band members' faces, and a stage presence more resembling a pagan ritual in full swing than the average rock band all made the group's shows stand out. Even without the spectacle of their live show, the spirit of the wild is still palpable on Snapped Ankles' recorded output, which lands somewhere between the guttural punk brashness of the Fall and the multicolored noise of early-2000s synth-punk bands. Second album Stunning Luxury is a whirlwind rush of these kinds of jagged edges. Throughout its dizzying 44 minutes, the album churns out nonstop bouncy-but-grizzled bass grooves, rhythms that shift between demented disco and numbingly repetitive Krautrock pulses, and all types of synth bleeps. Haggard, shouty Mark E. Smith-styled vocals and cheerleader chants à la Le Tigre make up some of the best songs here, in particular the big beat plunder of "Rechargeable." Elsewhere, the fried funk of "Three Steps" reimagines Liquid Liquid through the lens of a deranged soapbox preacher, shouting rhetoric through a megaphone as the bass-driven song drowns in circuit-bent synth tones. "Drink and Glide" is closer to pop, riding a tense but melodic rhythm and offering hooks in the form of tightly arranged guitars and gnawing synth lines. Snapped Ankles' wild-eyed formula is better taken in one song at a time, as sitting through the entire album can quickly exhaust the senses. Even though Stunning Luxury is an overwhelming blur at times, small doses of its feral excitement can be infectious and even catchy in their own surreal way.
