Producer/writer
Dennis Lambert had tunnel vision when it came to
the Temptations:
Dennis Edwards was the only
Temptation Lambert could see, and the other members seemed to be in his way. Eight tracks comprise
Surface Thrills, and
Edwards sings them all. This could very well have been a
Dennis Edwards solo album;
Edwards left the group after this to record solo, with Lambert (who else) producing.
Surface Thrills is one of the least thrilling LPs of
the Temptations' career. Only "Love's on My Mind Tonight" saves it from being a straight turkey. "Surface Thrills" did nothing when released as a single; the other songs are unmemorable, formulaic productions that lack substance and charm. ~ Andrew Hamilton
