This fine sampler features trombonist
Ole "Fessor" Lindgreen's Big City Band on five occasions during 1978-1981. While two songs have the basic septet, other selections welcome such guests as cornetist
Wild Bill Davison (who is heard on
Neal Hefti's "Duet," "My Friend Bill," and "Just a Closer Walk With Thee"), trumpeter
Doc Cheatham, clarinetist Herb Hall, bassist John Williams, violinist/guitarist Claude Williams, and hot trumpeter
Finn Otto Hansen. The music is mostly Dixieland and swing, including such numbers as "Jumpin' With McShann," Dickie Wells' "Four O'Clock Drag," and "Blues for Bill Coleman" with a lot of originals, including eight by
Fessor. The music is easily enjoyable and recommended to fans of trad jazz. ~ Scott Yanow
