Percussionist
Bujo Kevin Jones is a very talented and colorful player, both as a soloist and as an accompanist. He is heard in both roles on this well-conceived outing. In addition to
Jones' features and a couple vocal pieces, there is plenty of space for his core septet to stretch out. Tenor saxophonist Brian Horton, trumpeter Kevin Louis, flutist George Makinto, and pianist Kelvin Sholar excel among the soloists and, in addition to the originals, the band performs an unusual version of "Seven Steps to Heaven" in 6/8 time and Horton's "Beautiful," which is reminiscent of "Naima."
