Since he got a job as an artistic consultant at Def Jam, Snoop Dogg has obviously been keen to promote musicians who are related one way or another to his record label. With Snoop Dogg Presents Algorithm, he invites no fewer than 31 artists for what seems very much like a catalogue compilation. And while the concept may be worrying, the result is not. With the help of rap heavyweights such as Jadakiss, Benny the Butcher, Too $hort, Busta Rhymes or Ice Cube, he is able to put together a few tasty dream teams, enhanced by deftly-deployed guest appearances from artists like Method Man and Redman on Alright or with Dave East and Fabolous on Make Some Money. But the 23 tracks (plus two interludes) also shine with some quality RnB. The legends Mary J. Blige and Usher are on board, as are the youngsters Malaya Watson on the superb Anxiety and Nefertiti Avani on Make It Last. There is something for everyone, especially when he decides to venture into Afrobeats with October London on I Want You or into his beloved funk rhythms on Diamond Life. This Algorithm is a massive project which the great Snoop brings off magnificently. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
