Mais que s'est-il passé ? De la noirceur de Nights Thoughts paru en 2016, Suede avait sorti douze pistes taillées dans un marbre bowien, grandiloquent et impeccable. Bien qu'un brin passé, comme titrait sa clôture When We Were Young. Dernier volet du triptyque entamé après leur reformation en 2010 avec Bloodsports (2013) et Night Thoughts (2016), Blue Hour vire lugubre. Son chanteur, Brett Anderson : « Je n'aime pas la musique joyeuse ; je ne veux pas que Suede soit joyeux. » Car Suede habite pleinement le« Suedeworld », un univers « situé dans un paysage rural, sur la bande d'arrêt d'urgence de l'autoroute, entre les chemins de campagne et les déchetteries à ciel ouvert. C'est délimité par un grillage avec un blaireau en train de pourrir au sol. » Anderson veut repousser les frontières de Suede, rare survivant de la britpop encore appétissant. C'est comme ça qu'il se renouvelle et qu'il trouve « des nouvelles façons d'être Suede ». De As One à Flytipping, la formation londonienne célèbre, à grand renfort de cordes boisées mélos, guitares et de synthés, une messe tantôt élégiaque (The Invisibles), tantôt crasseuse (Beyond the Outskirts).
