The first chance for
the Memphis Horns to step to the front of the studio, their 1970 debut album was a collection of simmering grooves and brassy horns. Though they weren't as crucial on their own as the competition (
Booker T. & the MG's and
the Dixie Flyers, the latter with several members featured here as well), the group really impresses on Memphis standards like
Otis Redding's "I Can't Turn You Loose" and "Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa (Sad Song),"
the Box Tops' "Cry Like a Baby," and a torrid one-two punch: the
Sam & Dave medley "You Don't Know (Like I Know)" and "Soul Man."
