This is the sound of future pop. Synth melodies overlaid with Brit-sounding, almost robotic vocals (not unlike
Devo or the rare vocals of
Man or Astroman, only from the U.K.), mixed with simple yet effective dark guitars and the perfect percussive accents of
Modest Mouse drummer Jeremiah Green. Something like
the Smiths playing on Jupiter in 2150 with
Morissey's vain sass taken away. As this is the band's first album, you hear a more stripped-down and straightforward of what they would later doon future albums. A strong album of dreamy android pop with a 1984 edge. ~ Blake Butler
