One of England's finest jazz musicians,
Tubby Hayes was a superior tenor saxophonist who was also quite capable on vibes and flute. This fine LP gives one an overview of
Hayes on a variety of mostly previously unissued selections.
Hayes plays vibes behind fellow tenor
Ronnie Scott on two numbers from the 1957-59 period, is heard with
the Harry South Orchestra, heads a quartet that also includes pianist
Victor Feldman, leads three versions of his big band, and on his very last recording (Apr. 1972), he plays "I Thought About You" with a quartet. This album is an excellent introduction to
Tubby Hayes, an excellent musician in danger of being forgotten due to his early death.
