What can you say about
Polysics at this point that hasn't been said already? Still going strong since the band's start in 1997 with their freakishly hyperactive update on
Devo's video game punk, nothing much has changed musically, but the band still manages to sound fresh and exciting.
Weeeeeeeeee!!! is perfectly titled. Bursting out of the gates with a crackling, nervous energy, the band's 2012 album (2013 for the the States) packs all the excitement of a roller coaster ride. Amazing they can keep up this frantic pace from song to song, let alone for their entire discography. Joined by
Fumi on bass and synth and
Yano on drums, guitarist
Hiroyuki Hayashi has been leading this incarnation of the band since the mid-2000s, so their chemistry is whip-tight, to the point that they can stop on a dime, or flip from 8-bit J-pop to crunchy punk overdrive at a moment's notice. They do this so often and with such technical prowess that it's hard to keep up. Like other outings, this aggressive pace is so relentless that it can be exhausting in large doses; however, if one were to single out any of the songs, each would rank right up there with the band's best adrenalin-charged hits. "Weeeeeeeeee!!!" might be the most ridiculous song
Polysics have written, and that's saying a lot.
