Chicago-based rapper
Juan Mil has an easy flow and a commanding presence on the mic, but his debut album
World Get Ready is held back a bit by its thin production and nothing-new lyrical concerns. The beats are minimalist and electronic, in the style of recycled
Neptunes, and while songs like "I Can Tell," "Juan's Shot," and "I Ain't Playin'" get off a few good lines which
Juan Mil delivers with practiced ease, they're about the same old gangsta topics as so many other underground rap albums.
World Get Ready isn't a bad record, but it lacks the spark of personality that would move it from competent to exciting.
