Boston indie quartet
Bent Shapes first began releasing music in 2009 under the name Girlfriends. Led by singer/guitarist
Ben Potrykus and drummer
Andy Sadoway, their melodic and hyper-literate post-punk echoed classic East Coast bands like
the Feelies and
the Modern Lovers. After a handful of small indie releases and accolades for their ferocious gigs, they rebranded themselves as
Bent Shapes in 2012 and released a compilation of their Girlfriends-era material called Cull Shorts. A deal with Father/Daughter Records brought the release of their first proper LP, 2013's
Feels Weird. The album garnered plenty of acclaim and they were soon sharing the stage with acts like
Ted Leo,
Fucked Up, and
the Bats. The addition of guitarist Luke Brandfon and bassist Jenny Mudarri preceded their follow-up, as did a switch to Slumberland Records. Recorded and produced by
Elio DeLuca (
Titus Andronicus),
Bent Shapes' sophomore effort,
Wolves of Want, arrived in early 2016. ~ Timothy Monger
