DJ Python's innovative "deep reggaeton" sound blends smooth, spacious synth pads with broken, dembow-inspired rhythms. The New York-based producer's releases, including 2017's Dulce Compañia and 2022's Club Sentimientos, Vol. 2, have been showered with praise from the underground dance music community.
Based in the Ridgewood neighborhood of Queens, Brian Piñeyro released music under several different monikers before moving forward with the
DJ Python project. He recorded an extremely limited single with
Circuit des Yeux in 2014, then issued a lo-fi house 12" as DJ Wey in 2015. The first
DJ Python EP, ¡Estéreo Bomba! Vol. 1, came out on
Anthony Naples' Proibito imprint in 2016. Additional EPs as DJ Wey, Luis, and Deejay Xanax followed throughout the rest of the year, blending deep house, breaks, and electro. His first full-length as
DJ Python, Dulce Compañia, was the debut release from
Naples' Incienso label in 2017. A deeper refinement of the first
Python EP's sound, the album was an immediate success, establishing Piñeyro as one of the most forward-thinking producers of his time. A slightly more club-tooled EP, Derretirse, appeared on Dutch label Dekmantel in 2019.
Python appeared on Ghostly International's Ghostly Swim 3 compilation and remixed songs by Klein Zage and
Carmen Villain before his second full-length, the continuously mixed
Mas Amable, arrived on Incienso in 2020. The three-track Club Sentimientos, Vol. 2 appeared in 2022. ~ Paul Simpson
