LNZNDRF, pronounced "Lanzendorf," is a collaboration between
the National's Scott and Bryan Devendorf and trombonist Ben Lanz (aka Hoferlanz) of
Beirut, who has played on the road and in the studio for
the National. With tracks pulled from improvisations recorded in a church in Cincinnati, Ohio over a span of less than three days, their eponymous debut was released with little advance fanfare in February 2016 on the 4AD label. Though not completely divorced from the work of their parent band, the album inhabited a darker, post-punk sound that recalled names like
the Cure and
New Order more than members' other incarnations. ~ Marcy Donelson
