Diese ausgezeichnete neue Gesamtaufnahme der neun Sinfonien von Beethoven veranschaulicht auf perfekte Weise die außergewöhnliche Qualität des Kölner WDR-Orchesters (nicht zu verwechseln mit dem Gürzenich-Orchester), das seit 2010 vom finnischen Dirigenten Jukka-Pekka Saraste geleitet wird. Ihre letzte Gesamtaufnahme der Sinfonien von Brahms sowie einige wunderschöne Aufnahmen, insbesondere von Mahler (Sinfonie Nr. 9), hatten bereits die Türen zur Exzellenz weit geöffnet.
Saraste schätzt die seit den 1970er Jahren verbreitete historische Interpretationsweise zwar, empfindet jedoch das Bedürfnis, nicht dogmatisch zu sein und vor allem diesem so oft aufgenommenen Werkzyklus neue Freiheit zu geben. Ihn interessiert dabei vor allem die Botschaft und die Kraft einer Musik, „die unsere Welt braucht". Die Kühnheit und Neuartigkeit der Orchestrierung stehen im Mittelpunkt der Arbeit des Dirigenten und seiner Musiker, mit einem Verzicht auf systematisches Vibrato, allgemein recht lebhaften Tempi, einer ständig betonten Rhythmik (die berühmten Beethoven‘schen Synkopen) und einer Klangdichte, an der intensiv gearbeitet wurde.
Saraste zufolge wäre es ein großer Fehler, die Tempoangaben wörtlich zu nehmen, da sie nur als Hinweis gemeint sind. Es ist verständlich, dass der Musikliebhaber von der unglaublichen Menge an Gesamtaufnahmen – darunter zahlreiche von großer Qualität – völlig überwältigt ist. Die vorliegende Aufnahme bietet den Vorteil, dass der Dirigent Rhetorik und Ausdruck verbindet, mit einem vielseitigen und brillanten deutschen Orchester, und das alles in einer außergewöhnlichen Tonaufnahme mit einer klaren und warmen Klangqualität.
