Clearly with a bold agenda in mind, this program, put together by Benoît Cambreling – the famed timpani soloist of the Orchestre National de Lyon – initiates a new collection of recordings on the Artalinna label called Innovation, consisting in pairing new works from the late 20th and early 21st centuries with great classics of music from the last century, such as Eight Pieces for Four Timpani, composed by Elliott Carter in 1950 and 1966, a genuine cornerstone of the timpani repertoire that would influence all the other creators of this program, from Toshi Ichiyanagi (Japan) to Alessandro Solbiati (Italy), to Jean-Pierre Drouet (France). © Artalinna/Qobuz
