On pourra dire que l’arrivée d’Olivier Benoit à la tête de lʼOrchestre National de Jazz aura fait couler beaucoup d’encre. Mais après tout, chaque nomination à la tête de cet orchestre est une mini-révolution, ne serait-ce que dans le projet artistique proposé. Nommé pour un mandat de quatre ans (2014-2017) Olivier Benoit inaugure avec ses musiciens ce onzième ONJ de lʼhistoire de lʼinstitution. Le chef d’orchestre (et guitariste) est motivé par le désir d’un orchestre intergénérationnel ouvert à de multiples registres stylistiques. Il s’est entouré de dix musiciens aux parcours riches et singuliers, tous impliqués dans des recherches musicales personnelles fortes, donnant ainsi naissance à un ONJ propre à prendre toutes les directions esthétiques possibles, et à réaliser son ambition dʼouverture et de décloisonnement des genres qui sont au coeur de son projet. Pour le mener à bien, il s’est adjoint le concours de Bruno Chevillon – artiste éminent de la scène internationale, musicien engagé, ayant une longue et prestigieuse carrière à son actif –, à qui il a confié en parallèle de son rôle de contrebassiste au sein de l’ONJ, celui de conseiller artistique.
