We really don't get that many chances to discover Szymanowski's repertoire of melodies, although he left us some 140 Lieder and Romances, mostly in Polish (many of them translations of German poems), with others in German or even in Russian. Tenor Rafał Majzner and pianist Katarzyna Rzeszutek have selected 14 melodies, written between 1902 and 1905, the composer's early mature period. Here we find a language which still bears the imprint of a certain late romanticism, with echoes of Rachmaninov in its harmonic richness, and also in the will to focus its discourse on Polish poets: Kazimierz Tetmajer, Jan Kasprowicz, Tadeusz Berent and Tadeusz Miciński. Rafał Majzne's voice is able to alternate from the tragic to the lyric, with an elocution which is always very close to storytelling, to narration. This is a repertoire which deserves to be played in concert more often, and, it must be said, deserves to be recorded by many more artists. © SM/Qobuz
