A songwriter, guitarist, violinist, and vocalist,
Amy Klein has made a name for herself with her passionate, personal, and anthemic rock music, as a solo artist and for her work with
Titus Andronicus,
Hilly Eye, and a handful of other projects. Born with a strong creative bent,
Klein began writing poetry when she was five years old. When she was in middle school, one of
Klein's close friends played guitar, and she became increasingly interested in learning to play herself.
Klein got a Fender Stratocaster for her 15th birthday, and she began immersing herself in the local band scene while working on her skills at home. After completing high school,
Klein attended Harvard, where she earned a degree in English literature.
Klein did some postgraduate work in Japan, where she became inspired by the local noise music community. Upon returning to the United States,
Klein settled in Brooklyn, and in 2009 she joined up with the noted indie punk band
Titus Andronicus. Taking the stage name
Amy Andronicus,
Klein's dynamic guitar work and enthusiastic on-stage performances made her a favorite with fans, but in 2011 she amicably parted ways with the band, citing their busy schedule. While
Klein began working towards an M.F.A. in creative writing, she hardly turned her back on music. She had already begun playing in a two-piece noise project,
Hilly Eye, who released the album
Reasons to Live in 2013.
Klein also wrote and performed solo material under the name
Solanin, and formed an Americana-influenced group,
Amy Klein & the Blue Star Band. And in 2012
Klein also debuted an urban folk ensemble, Leda. In addition to her work as a musician,
Klein also worked as a freelance writer, publishing her work with The New York Observer, The Believer, The Village Voice, and The DCist.
Klein is also the founder of Permanent Wave, a feminist activist organization. In June 2016
Klein released her first solo album,
Fire, a typically strong and intelligent set with the guitarist and singer backed by Jeremy Wilms (of King Mono) on keyboards and guitars, Christian Bongers (of
Hurricane Bells) on bass, and Colin Brooks (of the News Same and
Sea Ray) on drums. ~ Mark Deming
