With one foot in the American South and the other in his hometown of New York City, Astara's eclectic range of influences has led to a distinctive sound: one that integrates sleek club-facing grooves with evocative lyrics. Born in North Carolina and raised in New York City, Astara's initial musical experience was shaped by classical piano lessons and a nightly lull of James Taylor and Simon & Garfunkel. But in his teenage years his passion pulled him elsewhere: towards the sound of New York’s house music underground. Captivated by the downtown youth culture of New York’s bygone club-kid era, Astara began a process of education in the history of the city's nocturnal dance music culture. Kenny Dope, Todd Terry, and the Martinez Brothers served as vital early inspiration for Astara's first endeavors, but in the midst of New York's rich dance culture, Astara felt as if there was something missing from his work. Recalling childhood heroes such as James Taylor and Loretta Lynn, Astara refined his creative vision and set his sights on Nashville in 2019. In 2020, a new direction has emerged. In his words, "My sound draws influence from the rich storytelling history of country and Americana culture, while finding an anchor in the four-on-the-floor rhythms I came to know and love in New York.” The result is a vocal-driven house sound suffused with rich instrumentation and grounded by deep house bass lines. Astara's first release hits platforms on July 17th, with much more in store.
