Careca was a reputed sambista and pianist. He wrote many songs and among the most successful are "Ai, Seu Mé" (with Freire Júnior, hit of the Carnival of 1922; the tune satirized the Republic president Artur Bernardes and yielded problems for both); "Chuva Não Mata Ninguém," "Teresa," "Mulata, Sai Do Portão," "Mordedor," "Não Dou Confiança," "Foi Ela Que Nos Deixou," "Na Favela Tem Valente," "Cresça e Apareça," and "Ela Disse Uma Vez Pra Mim." ~ Alvaro Neder
