A singer and songwriter from Toronto, Chris Godfrey brings an authentic approach to his blues-laden, soul music. Inspired by a wide array of artists from Freddie King to Frank Ocean, his music, while not “retro”, invokes a sense of honesty that’s reminiscent of a bygone era. His intimate vocals pair perfectly with thoughtful lyrics, while his guitar playing carries his compositions to territory that is often unexplored by his contemporaries.
It wasn’t until he was 17 that his true love for the guitar was unearthed. He heard a clip of Stevie-Ray Vaughan playing in his friend’s basement, and everything changed. From that point on, the guitar became his obsession, eventually leading him to drop out of university in pursuit of a career in music. While playing in local bars, he became frustrated with his own performance capabilities, feeling that he had not given himself enough time to grow, musically. The Toronto musician decided to step back as a frontman, and spent the next few years honing his craft in relative silence. He interned at a local recording studio, soaking up whatever he could about the music-making process, and in December, 2018, returned with the EP, Generation Pains.
