Got a Girl is an American indie pop duo formed by esteemed producer
Dan "The Automator" Nakamura (
Gorillaz,
Deltron 3030,
Handsome Boy Modeling School) and singer/actress
Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Smashed, Live Free or Die Hard). The two met on the set of the 2010 movie Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, where
Winstead was acting in a supporting role and
Nakamura was providing part of the film's score. Although
Winstead had never before made music professionally,
Nakamura was impressed with her smooth, dulcet voice and the two bonded over a shared love of '60s French pop, café jazz, psychedelia, and hip-hop. Using these styles as their starting point, they experimented with making music together and were thrilled with the initial results. They began working on an album of slinky, sophisticated pop songs in a retro style that blended with
Nakamura's distinctive hip-hop-influenced beats. Using the name
Got a Girl, they tested the waters by releasing the single "You and Me" in May 2013. Their debut album,
I Love You But I Must Drive Off This Cliff Now, arrived a year later in July 2014. ~ Timothy Monger
